Pietermaritzburg Aero Club has been providing quality flight training since May 1938 making it one of the oldest flying clubs in South Africa. We are registered with the South African Civil Aviation Authority and have an excellent safety record.
We are an independent non-profit organisation that is dedicated to fostering aviation and providing flying opportunities to our members at the best possible rates. We operate a fleet of aircraft that is reviewed regularly to ensure that it meets our changing needs.
We use two-seat low wing Sling 2 trainers and a four seater Cessna 172 for our ab initio flight training with full-time instructors available throughout the week and weekends.
The Sling trainers are South African designed and built aircraft, and are a delight to fly! They have circumnavigated the globe multiple times, and are built at Tedderfield outside Johannesburg at The Airplane Factory. The Cessna is a reliable, forgiving, trainer and favourite family aircraft. These stoic aircraft have stood the test of time and are a favourite of many pilots.
Our courses cover a range of licences, from Private Pilot to Airline Transport Pilot, all of which are tailored to your exact needs.
Full-time students can get a Private Pilot License in just 3 to 4 months, while part-time options are also available for those who are working or studying.

Everything You Need To Know
What is a trial lesson?
If you have never flown before, it is an excellent idea to start with a Trial Lesson. The total experience takes about an hour and includes a briefing on how the basic controls work, and a short flight, where you handle the flight controls in flight, under the guidance and protection of your Flight Instructor.
What’s in a PPL?
A PPL is a Private Pilot License. It is a stand-alone licence, like having a car licence, but if you want a career as a Pilot, you have to take the next step, the CPL - Commercial Pilot License.
The minimum requirements for a PPL are:
45 hours Flight Training
8 Written Exams
Aviation Medical
17 years of age (but you can start at 16).
Which matric subjects are required?
It depends.If you or your folks are paying for you, and you are planning to go to a small to medium-sized approved Flight School, then the answer is: study what you want to for matric. We don't look at your results. We just care about your love, your passion, your insatiable desire, to fly.If you want to go to a Flight Academy or get funding for your training, then you will need maths Core and Physics. Why? Because they want to be sure you have the ability to complete the exams without struggling. Flying Exams require 75% to pass.
Maximum & Minimum flying age?
Here are the youngest ages for the different licences:You may start flight training at 15, but must be 16 to fly solo, and 17 to do your PPL flight test (Private Pilot License). You must be 18 to do your CPL flight test (Commercial Pilot License), and 21 for your ATPL flight test (Airline Transport Pilot License).As long as you pass your aviation medical, there is no upper age limit.
